11.04.17RECITAL AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

"Pianist Solungga Liu performs music drawn almost entirely from the manuscript collections at the Library of Congress. Among her specialties is the music of Charles Griffes, an underappreciated American composer of vital music that bridged the worlds of Romanticism and Impressionism. Included in the program is Griffes’ transcription of Les parfums de la nuit by Claude Debussy--a transcription once thought lost, but present in manuscript at the Library. The sesquicentennial of the birth of composer Amy Beach will be celebrated with the performance of two evocative piano works, including the Ballade. Liu will also perform one of the Library’s great treasures by César Franck: the Prélude, choral et fugue."

05.02.17SOLUNGGA LIU CELEBRATES MAJOR CD RELEASE WITH THE U OF MINNESOTA WIND ENSEMBLE

The highly respected independent label Bridge Records has just announced the release of an album featuring Solungga Liu, Associate Professor of Piano at BGSU, in a CD of virtuosic works for wind ensemble by Gregory Mertl, performed by the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble. The disc, BRIDGE 9489, came out on May 2, 2017.

She is the soloist in central work on the CD, Mertl’s Piano Concerto. It was commissioned by the prestigious Barlow Endowment specifically for her, the wind ensemble and its esteemed conductor, Craig Kirchhoff.

Liu premiered and recorded this concerto at the Ted Mann Hall, University of Minnesota under the baton of Craig Kirchhoff. It represents a monumental collaboration between her, the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble, the composer and Craig Kirchhoff and is a significant new contribution to the piano concerto repertoire.
